Download Nokia Map Data for India

If like me, you are a fan of GPS and find reassurance in it’s ability to help you find your location and directions anywhere in the world, you will most certainly want your GPS device to report some map data and not just coordinates.

Fortunately, Nokia Maps is not only an excellent application that offers highly detailed maps and turn-by-turn navigation, it also features the ability to load map data from Memory and does not require an active Internet connection to function (take that Google Maps).

If your Nokia Phone is connected to the Internet via WiFi/3G etc., Nokia Maps can also download updated tiles of the map on-the-fly along with updated location information. If the phone is not connected to the Internet, Nokia Maps can still benefit from data stored in Phone Memory.

While Nokia Phones come with Nokia PC Suite / Ovi Suite to download and store Map data, the application does not work well on slow connections. It also has issues remembering which location’s map-data has already been downloaded in previous sessions.

Fortunately, you can download the Map Data using a Download Manager on your computer and transfer them to your phone manually.

Nokia Map Data – Updated: April 30, 2012, Version: 00.02.46.103.

Instructions:

  1. Connect the Phone to your computer using USB. Your phone should prompt you to choose mode (for ex: PC Suite / Mass Storage / File Transfer). Select ‘Mass Storage Mode’ on the phone.
  2. In a few moments, your computer should detect your phone as a USB Removable Drive. Open ‘My Computer’ to find out what is the drive letter assigned to your phone. If your phone supports Internal Memory as well as External Memory (SD Card), you may see two drive letters. Open the drive that is used by Maps Application on your phone to store it’s data. To determine which memory is used by the Maps application, start the application and check Options.
  3. Use the hyperlinks above to download highly detailed maps of States of India and map data for whole of India.
  4. Extract the download ZIP files to a single location on your computer. You should end up with 16 folders numbers 0 through F (hexadecimal numbering).
  5. Select all folders and Copy them to clipboard.
  6. Open the Removable Drive representing your Phone’s memory that is used by Nokia Maps.
  7. On the selected Removable drive, locate the folder “Cities\DiskCache”. It should already have the 16 folders.
  8. Paste from Clipboard. The 16 folders from your HDD will get copied to your Phone’s selected memory. You maybe prompted to Replace / Skip / Overwrite files. Select Overwrite.
  9. If the maps application does not use the updated files, delete the 16 folders from the Phone’s selected memory before copying them from the HDD.

Hope this helps!

      Hi,
I tried and downloaded the map of Karnataka to “Cities\diskcache” folder replacing the other folders which was already there.
Now, how do i open the maps from the mobile? Please guide me.

      Thanks,
      Ram

        Dear Ram,

If you have followed the instructions correctly, then ‘Maps’ program on your Nokia phone will use the data you have loaded.

To test this, make sure that your phone does not have Internet connectivity via GPRS/EDGE/3G/WiFi. i.e. take your phone ‘Offline’.

Now if you trigger maps, and scroll to any location in Karnataka, you should be able to see the road/location data of the area even with your phone disconnected from the Internet.

If your phone is ‘Online’, Nokia Maps will always attempt to download the latest version of the map data (only for the area you are seeing, not entire state). It also downloads additional information such as ATM, Hospital, Petrol Pump locations etc. (this is not included in offline map data).

          Hi Rajib,
Thanks for the reply, but even now i’m unable to use offline maps.
I’ve Nokia maps 3.04 installed by default with firmware.
When i click on Maps app from the Main menu, i get a wrench button on left bottom corner.
When i click it and click map, i’m seeing “memory to be used” is set to E:Mass Memory on my X6. Is it that maps data should be stored in E:\Cities\datacache\?

Also, when i extract Karnataka maps it only shows folders from 0 to 9 and “a” folder only and not till “f”.

Is this right what i’ve done? Plz help.

          Thanks,
          Ram

            Hi Ram,

If the memory to be used is “E:”, then the maps folder should also be stored in there.
It is ok if folders from 0 – f do not show. Some maps may use a few folders.

hi.. i liked your great effort. Will you please upload cache of google maps of india please????

    • Rajib Ghosh says:

      Dear Sudheer,

Will it work if the cache of Google Map data is simply dumped into another phone? I think database of Google Maps software would have to be updated as well.

      Regards

is it possible to down load them as im using nokia e71 right now,
please let me have the link if it still exists,
    thank you

Unfortunately Nokia has shutdown its map servers. Another approach would be to install other maps for the S60 OS. There are Google Maps and Open Street Maps apps still available online. Perhaps those apps will be able to get current data.
