I understood that we loose some money for the call, but What the benefit they get if some one made a call the specified number

      Dear Din,

Most of these scams are simple money pulling exercises. The reason they are done from countries like Nigeria/Barbados etc. is because in these countries the criminals are well entrenched and the law-order officials are either powerless or hand-in-glove with these criminals.

First they will confirm to you that you have won a million dollars. Next they will ask your bank details to deposit the money but ask you to pay a ‘handling charge’. After the handling charge, they will ask you to pay some other bank fees. Then they will ask you to pay some amount to help clear the file from some ministry. This will go on and on and on till you have actually lost a lot of money.

Phone-scams also exist (like adult hotlines) where the simple aim is to make you make expensive long-distance calls. Operators of these scams receive money from their telephone service provider. The reason these scams work is because while the scammer does not pay to receive incoming calls, his phone-service-provider receives money from the overseas phone-service-provider (for handling the inbound call).

For ex: if you use BSNL to Call Airtel, BSNL actually pays airtel to receive the call. Thus BSNL makes a loss on outgoing calls which it makes up by billing the caller a little extra. Since Airtel is receiving money from BSNL for receiving the call, it does not mind sharing the revenue with it’s customer who is receiving the call (as long as the inbound call volume/revenue is high).

This is very similar to the way the TV programs make you vote by SMS and telephone calls. They receive a percentage of the revenue generated by the telephone-service-providers.

Ever wonder why voting is not allowed by Email / Website?

      HTH
